Treeton Local History Group

Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 30 April 2015

In the Reading Rooms Treeton

Present: 13 Members present

1.      Apologies: Iris Gahegan, Andy and Sue Stevens, Ron Robinson, Pat Welch, John and Leslie Foster, Monica and Derek Walker, Joan Frost, Ernest Walker, Stephen and Bev Walker.

2. Minutes of AGM held on 24 April 2014.

Acceptance was proposed by Dave Aveling, seconded by Gordon Payne and unanimously agreed.  There were no matters arising.

3.      Report from Chair.

Eric Tillery, Chair, spoke of the sadness of losing long time member John Nuttall.  He noted the generally good attendance at meetings and reminded everyone of the variety of talks and events which had taken place during the year. All the talks had been well received and several members had enjoyed a visit to Wentworth Woodhouse in August.  The entertainment provided by magician Brian Varley at the Christmas Party was excellent, although the attendance at this event was very low.

A memorial wreath had been placed on the war memorial on behalf of the Group.

4.      Presentation of Annual Accounts

Iris had asked for the discrepancy between income from membership fees and the cost of speakers to be noted, together with the significant decrease in refreshment income.

The bank balance is now £1114 compared with £1097 last year but this includes a discretionary grant from Treeton Parish Council of £150.  No website fees have yet been paid for this year and speaker costs for next year will be £370.

There were 50 members in 2014/15 including 7 honorary life members.

Acceptance of the accounts was proposed by Pat Payne, seconded by Linda Shepherd and unanimously agreed.

5.      Ele.ction of Honorary Officers

All Officers were willing to continue as follows:

Chair: Eric Tillery

Vice-Chair: Gordon Payne

Secretary: Margaret Young.

Treasurer/ Membership Secretary: Iris Gahegan

Newsletter Editor: Jean Demaine

Archivist: David Aveling

Events Coordinator: Margaret Young

6.      Election of Steering Committee

Monica and Derek Walker had tendered their resignation from the committee.  They will be sadly missed and a letter of appreciation for their many years of work will be sent.

Committee members willing to continue are: Linda Shepherd, Peter Ingham, Pat Payne and Jean Noble.   An appeal for new committee members was made and members were reminded that any member is welcome to come to any committee meeting as an observer.

7. Annual Subscriptions

In view of the increased cost of speakers, the committee proposed that the membership fee should be increased to £10 per person with a visitor fee of £2.  This is still very low compared with other societies and equates to a meeting fee of under £1 per person. These increases were unanimously agreed.

The committee also proposed a donation of £1 for refreshments, which was also unanimously agreed.  Linda Shepherd kindly offered to create a laminated notice setting out these charges for display at meetings.

8.      Suggestions for Future meetings

Two suggestions for future visits were made: Sheffield Cemetery and The National Coal Mining Museum.

10.    Any Other Business

Carol Wise informed us of a project by Worksop N.A.D.F.A.S who have undertaken to record archive documents relating to St. Helen’s Church.  Members of the community are involved in the fortnightly sessions and everyone is welcome to visit.  The results will be published, with copies to be held by St. Helen’s Church and The British Library.

Carol Robinson thanked all the committee members for their work during the year.

The meeting ended at 8.20 pm.                                  Margaret Young  (Secretary)
