March 2015 Meeting Report

E-mail Print PDF

The speaker for March was Ian Marshall who talked about ‘The Curious World of Olde Time Punishments’

There were no prisons until Victorian times, so all offenders were punished and Ian showed us many methods of punishment each more gruesome that the one before., the ducking stool, the pillory and stocks which all parishes had to have by law.

He talked about capital and corporal punishment, which included flogging and the Birch. The latter remained legal until the 1970s.

It was an unusual subject for a talk, but delivered very well by Ian.
