October 2014 meeting report

E-mail Print PDF

On Thursday 30th October David Mercer gave the group a talk on Medieval History, and specifically about cooking in Medieval England. At this time kitchens were mainly for the rich while the poor people would have a take away in the form of a pie, of which they would only eat the filling.

The kitchens of the rich were surprisingly well equipped and staffed. The evidence for this can be found in old buildings such as Gainsborough Old Hall and from the Luttrell Psalter; a fourteenth century book of psalms that was illustrated by fascinating detailed pictures which gave an insight into all aspects of everyday life including cooking.
