August 2013 meeting report

Our visit to Roche Abbey on 22 August coincided with one of the hottest days of the year and the brilliant sunshine enhanced the beautiful setting of the ruins of the 12th century Cistercian monastery. The guide for our 24-strong group was Pat McLoughlin (a regular speaker at our meetings), who gave us a very interesting and informative commentary. He told us that the soaring early Gothic transepts still survive to their original height and are ranked in importance with the finest early Gothic architecture in Britain.

Our meeting for July 2013 was a member's evening, which was a great success, with about 20 people able to attend.   Hedley Frost spoke about some locally-found artefacts that he had brought and Eric Tillery and Gordon Payne made presentations about their family history.  Many peoplewere able to join in with memories, and some had brought photographs ot share, which made for a a very pleasant and enjoyable social evening.

May 2013 meeting report

The speaker at the May meeting was Joanne Brunt, who gave a talk entitled ‘Can we afford the doctor?’ It was a very humorous talk about the self-medication that happened before the National Health Service was founded; this was illustrated by some artefacts from the early- to mid-20th century, which some of the audience recognised only too well.
